This paper is about the sustainable development of the Sochi region for the Winter Olympic Games 2014. The Olympic Committee elaborated an ecological strategy in order to be “Green”. A new transport system has been built according to the needs of the Winter Olympic Games with the respect of environment. Some technological innovations have been brought in the event to prevent the lack and the quality of snow. Moreover they have wisely thought about the future use of the facilities by hosting new events such the Formula 1 or the Football World Cup. The Games have succeeded from an economical and social aspect but being ecologically friendly in such large event still remains a challenge.

The Swiss railways have come up with a new innovation since the 14th of October 2013: they transport your luggage from your home to the final destination of your journey.

The main idea is to make peoples travelling easier (not having their luggage to bring around) and to ensure more place in the trains in which, it is difficult to move because of all the luggage.

With this service, the Swiss federal trains tries to reach as many kind of travellers as possible. The target market is various, from people travelling in Switzerland, to those travelling in a foreign country, to those going to the airport and more..Image

Lift-off for urban cable car projects as cities seek transport solutions



When we hear the word cable car we tend to think of mountains, snow, skiing and holidays. Many discussions are around the climate change and the impact it has on cable car companies and destinations. However, there is an alternative solution regarding the usage of the cable way in cities as well as in developing and poor countries. The alternative usage of the cable cars as a public transportation system offers many opportunities through different sections. It offers added value to the tourist for discovering destinations and landscapes in a peaceful atmosphere far away from the hectic, noisy and stressful city traffic. Also the fact of the growing population and the place needed requires a sustainable and feasible solution. The cable car offers not only an opportunity for already developed countries or areas, but also in poor and developing counties. Often the people live far away from the city centre which often lies up in the hills or having almost inaccessible routes to rich. The cable cars would offer an alternative solution for the transportation system in the future. It would integrate the urban people in providing access to the city in the case of finding a job or other needs. + Cost factor / Space / Construction The usage of such cable cars instead of vehicles is more environmental friendly and it is less costly and more efficient in transporting capacity per hour. Cable cars produce very low emissions and require less energy because there’s constant rotation. Also the aerial space is much less compared to the space needed for a subway or tramline. Therefore it makes it easy to integrate such a transportation system into a city which may already exist.

Existing examples

There are already cities and destinations which are using the cable car system to create a greater ease in the transportation system. Already 1934 in French the cable car was used to transport people from the French Alps into the city centre from a hilltop across the river Isère. Many other projects where planned but never realized like the rejected at Issy les Moulineaux, near Paris because local residents did not like the idea of the cable car passing over their rooftops. Nevertheless new projects are planned like a cable-car service in Toulhouse is due to open in 2017 connecting three parts which are separated by the river and a hill. The cable car will make the connection to the metro. The distance of that cable car is about 2.6km and has a Passengers capacity up to 7,000/ hour in a 90secont interval. This saves almost 1 hour compared to drive the same distance by car or bus.
